The Inspiration Behind the Project
It all started with a dream and a hefty dose of inspiration from the internet. The idea of turning my Renault Clio into a livable space for long trips captivated me from the start. I imagined waking up in a new place every day, with the comfort of carrying my "home" on my back. With the help of a good friend, Rover, who had already shown up in other videos sharing travel adventures, we decided to take on this project. Rover, with his carpentry skills, was key to making this idea a reality.
The Conversion Process
Converting a Renault Clio into a camper takes creativity and precision. We kicked off the project by choosing the right materials: light but sturdy wood and a three-centimetre Ikea mattress, perfect for our limited space. The structure had to be strong enough to hold the weight of one or two people, but also light enough not to overload the car.
The magic began with adapting the seats and installing a central base for the mattress to rest on. This was probably the biggest challenge: making sure everything fit perfectly into the tight space of a Clio. Even so, with a bit of ingenuity and a few tweaks to the car's original layout, we managed to create a comfortable, functional sleeping area.
Gear and Comforts
Beyond the bed, storage and basic comforts were essential to think through. We used the boot and the spaces under the bed to stash everything we needed, from cooking gear to climbing equipment. The key was staying organised and picking compact, multi-purpose kit.
One of the most exciting parts of this project was adding things that let me be self-sufficient on my trips. We set up a small cooking system and even came up with a solution for a portable shower. Everything designed to make the most of the space and keep things comfortable.
First Trial and Reflections
The first night in my Clio camper was a mix of excitement and nerves. Despite the extreme cold we faced, the sleeping bag and the insulation we'd installed kept the inside surprisingly warm and cosy. Waking up out in nature, free to move wherever I wanted, made every ounce of effort I'd put into this project worth it.
